Geminor's five biggest operational HUBs treated more than 350 000 tons of waste fractions in 2022, from a group total of 1.82 million tons. The Danish processing facility in Aalborg climbed to the top in terms of tonnage last year.

Despite its relatively short existence, the two-year-old Geminor HUB in Aalborg in Denmark proved to be Geminor’s most busy in 2022. During the last year, the operational HUB in Aalborg processed as much as 99,538 tonnes of waste fractions.

In 2022, the waste treated in the Aalborg HUB went to 10 different off-takers, the biggest being the Aalborg Portland cement factory which receives tailor-made SRF as secondary fuel.

– The Aalborg HUB was actually closed down in 2019 due to low activity, but was soon after moved to a bigger location and reopened when our partnership with Aalborg Portland was extended. Since then, we have been investing in the development of the HUB, turning it into an efficient processing facility for both SRF and RDF, says Country manager for Geminor in Denmark, Kasper Thomsen.

Kasper Thomsen, CM at Geminor DK.

– At present, our Danish facilities receive waste fractions from countries such as the UK, Germany, Poland and Norway, and processes these for off-takers both domestically and abroad. The waste contents differ from country to country, but we have expanded the capacity at both Aalborg and our HUB in Køge so that we can receive, treat and store the waste fractions continuously. We will continue to serve the upstream market, but will also be looking to develop our plastic sorting and bioRDF production moving onwards, says Country manager for Geminor in Denmark, Kasper Thomsen.

The importance of the HUBs increases due to the changes in the waste market in 2022, explains Kasper Thomsen.

– The security of supply has for many off-takers become just as important as the price. Our investment has given us steady and punctual operations as well as better logistics and flexibility, which is exactly what the market currently requires, says Thomsen.

After Aalborg (99,538 tonnes) and Køge (79,196 tonnes), the biggest Swedish HUB at Oxelösund follow with a total of 74 807 tonnes of treated waste in 2022. Norway’s most active HUB is at Borg, with just over 61,000 tonnes last year. The Finnish HUB at Loviisa is Finland’s largest with a tonnage of over 40 000 in 2022. The total tonnage handled by Geminor in 2022 was a record breaking 1,82 million.
