Geminor has been awarded a major public tender to handle 1.2 million tonnes of Ecobales over three years. The project ensures that these waste fractions are transported to high-efficiency energy recovery plants across the Nordics, Germany, and the Netherlands.

The three-year contract, awarded by Regione Campania through Executive Decree no. 698 on August 5, 2024, mandates the removal and recovery of Ecobales from storage sites across the region. The waste is being transported to multiple energy recovery plants, where it will serve as a vital fuel source. To accommodate seasonal variations in demand and scheduled maintenance at energy facilities, the shipments will be distributed across several locations to ensure efficiency and stability.

While most of the volumes from the tender have been allocated, discussions continue to secure additional offtake capacity for further placements. The UK, traditionally an exporter of RDF, could become an import destination in the coming years due to its expanded recovery capacity, which is set to increase by 5 million tonnes between 2025 and 2026.

Operations have already begun, with notifications submitted to the relevant authorities. The Ecobales process involves repackaging the waste into secure rectangular and round bales, tied with plastic or iron wire, and wrapped for safe transport. The waste is being shipped to authorized recovery plants across Europe using sea containers and cargo vessels with capacities ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 tonnes.

The tender process follows strict legal protocols, including oversight by the public prosecutor’s office, while the Transfrontier Shipment (TFS) system guarantees full traceability of all waste exports.

Given past concerns about waste management in the Campania region, the European tender issued by Regione Campania, together with the resulting contracts, ensures strict financial oversight, strong compliance measures, and full transparency and accountability

Since opening its Italian office in 2020, Geminor Italia has been a key player in promoting sustainable waste management across the region, strengthening industry partnerships, and fostering innovation in waste recovery.
